Movie Review: Red Riding Hood

Red Riding Hood
Ex-Twilight director, Catherine Hardwicke's spin on this classic children's bedtime story certainly does not disappoint.

Imagine the original tale, however, slightly more sexed up, meets Twilight and this is what you get.

The blockbuster, which is set in medieval times, tells the story of Valerie, played by Amanda Seyfried, who lives in a small village called Daggerhorn. Every month, on the full moon, the villagers carry out the ritual of sacrificing an animal in the hope that the haunting werewolf will spare them.

Naturally the film includes the stereotypical love triangle scenario. Enter amazingly good looking hunks here. The problem is that Valerie, who is in love with woodcutter Peter (Fernandez) has been promised to the wealthy, handsome, ironmonger Henry (Irons). Queue werewolf hunter, Father Solomon, who points out that it is likely that the wolf is one of the villagers. As suspicion grows to the identity of the wolf, Valerie finds herself in the middle of all the chaos as she is accused of being a witch. Although, it would appear that the wolf is a little closer to home than anyone expected. Typically both men fight it out for the love of their woman although it leads to the biggest sacrifice for one of them (not giving any spoilers away!) Filled with edge of your seat suspense and spine tingling surprises this is definitely a contender for film of the year.

Not surprisingly the film draws several similarities to Twilight. Seyfried’s voice-overs sound ever so slightly Bella-ish. There are also the similarities in the sweeping scenery shots over a snow covered mountain side. However, apart from that I cannot fault it.

This film has all the great aspects of a whodunit and keeps you guessing right until the revelation of the wolf's identity. I think Red Riding Hood will definitely fill a Twilight shaped gap until the release of Breaking Dawn this summer.
